Project name: Famous Players Theaters
Project type: Entertainment
Location: West Edmonton Mall, Alberta
Project size: Imax theatre and 12 movie theaters
Completion date: June,1999
Project contact: Brian Alexander
General contractor: PCL Constructors
Electrical budget: $4.5 million
Construction budget: $44 million

Project Description:  State of the art movie theatres incorporating stadium seating and total surround sound in all theatres. Total entertainment enhancement achieved with gaming areas and various food kiosks providing more than popcorn and pop fare. Unique design themes for the interior celebrated the history of past movies. The design elements had a fully working fire breathing dragon protecting her den, a replica of King Kong, F-14 planes from the movie, Top Gun and working replicas of those fabulous flying men in their machines.

Project challenges:

  1. The project required that the sound from one theatre could not migrate to the theatre next door. This required building a totally isolated room inside another room.
  2. The installation and operation of a fire show (Dragon) that occurs every 20 minutes was the first for Canada. Our past experience with dealing with explosive environments and gases gave us the ability to overcome several obstacles.
  3. This was the first new Imax theatre to be built in Canada in 20 years. Our past involvement with the original Imax built in Edmonton went a long ways to understanding the unique requirements of this phase of the project.
